A practical workshop, exploring the use of manipulatives from Year 1 through to Year 6, to develop a deeper understanding of key concepts in primary mathematics. The workshop will be an opportunity to try new ideas, including the use of everyday objects, formal mathematics resources, bar modelling and hands-on approaches to deepen children’s understanding of place value, number, calculations and fractions. The activities will give children a richer and deeper mastery of mathematics by demonstrating abstract ideas and core mathematical concepts in a variety of representations and problem-solving contexts. The ‘Making Maths Count’ project began in 2017, with a resource shared across Maths Hubs, teaching school alliances and schools across the UK, linking the use of concrete manipulatives, to pictorial, using photographs and drawings, to abstract, using numbers. Teachers will also develop their own range of pedagogical strategies for supporting understanding of counting, number and place value.
