After the demoralizing loss of the vital rail junction of Corinth, Mississippi, and the departure of Gen. P. G. T. Beauregard. Gen. Braxton Bragg takes over for the struggling Confederate army in the western theater. Realizing his reduced army cannot contend with the three federal forces in the vicinity of Corinth. Bragg looks for other targets that he can strike. By the fall of 1862, events are happening in the western theater. Grant and Rosecrans, both content to stay in their defensive positions in Western Tennessee. While Buell slowly marches towards the other vital railtown of Chattanooga, Tennessee. With his front opening up, Bragg, in cooperation with Smith, amazingly moves his army 700 miles via rail to interject himself between Buell and Chattanooga. While he is gone, Bragg instructs his subordinates left in Mississippi, Price and Van Dorn, to keep Grant and Rosecrans stationary in the region. With this movement east, Bragg hopes he adventure will turn into a possible invasion of Kentucky and maybe even the Midwest....
