The data reinforces the growing narrative that while the Switch 2 may have launched well initially, its ability to sustain mainstream demand in Western markets has clearly underperformed historical expectations. In response to the weaker performance, one senior Nintendo employee told reporters that the slowdown could be attributed to a “complicated economic landscape,” higher price points, and the absence of a major Western-focused game during the Christmas season. However, two of those explanations are largely within Nintendo’s control. Nintendo ultimately sets the Switch 2’s pricing strategy, and it also controls its first-party release calendar... including whether a major Western-appeal title is positioned to anchor the holiday season. Further signaling that Switch 2 sales are struggling to meet internal targets, Nintendo's retail partners appear to be leaning more aggressively on price cuts and hardware incentives. In early January 2026, Micro Center quietly introduced another $50 price drop on Switch 2 hardware, adding to a growing list of retailer-driven discounts. At the same time, Nintendo launched a new $99 Joy-Con 2 color variant, a move that looks less like celebration and more like an attempt to stimulate accessory-driven revenue amid slowing console sales.
