Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan are the latest Soviet republics to break away from Moscow to declare independence as the USSR continues to disintegrate. Uzbekistan is a major agricultural center but relies on the central government for raw materials so they support a central economic relationship with Moscow. The Soviet media continues to disassociate itself with Communism and the Communist past as Lenin’s image is removed from the masthead of the notorious newspaper Pravda. The Soviet Union and its various republics are experiencing food shortages and economic difficulties. Foreign economic relations can help alleviate these problems but as the central Moscow government disintegrates, there is no central government to negotiate with. This is why some economic cooperation among the republics may be important.
