On the calm waters of Lake Victoria in Buikwe District, a quiet revolution in fish farming is taking shape. Kamos Agro Fish Farm, established over a decade ago, has embraced a bold and unconventional model — abandoning imported commercial fish feeds and allowing the fish to feed naturally on nutrients available within the lake’s ecosystem. Across Uganda, many fish farmers have struggled to stay afloat. Industry statistics point to a high failure rate, largely blamed on the soaring cost of imported fish feeds from countries such as the Netherlands, Brazil and Israel. But here in Buikwe, floating cages gently sway on the lake and inside them, thousands of fish thrive without a single pellet of imported feed says Oren Olter a commercial fish farmer.
