Originally streamed Feb 11, 2024. It seems like a good thing to do, so let's celebrate 10 years of streaming on Twitch! We're replaying another game that was among the first games I streamed... in this case, this was one of the first long multi-stream games. Tomb Raider 1 is another of my absolute favorite games, and I've been looking for an excuse to replay it, so let's try the Saturn version which I have not yet played. First off, I need to say this: I highly recommend playing the console versions of Tomb Raider 1, either the PS1 or Saturn, and NOT the PC version. It used to be that the PC version was a broken version of the game, with the proper soundtrack and save system stripped out. However, the remastered version that has Tomb Raider 1-3 has replaced the old PC version on Steam, which is a good thing, because it's finally getting rid of the broken version of the game. Unfortunately, the remastered version for all it's strengths, like having the proper music added back in and being able to switch graphics on the fly, STILL has the massive problem of having stripped out the proper save system. Technically it's still in there, but only as an unlockable after you beat the game. This is completely backwards and a poor design decision. Now, I know plenty of people will disagree, they will say "the game is more fun when I can save scum and undo any mistakes I make," but I think you're fooling yourself. This removes the inherent excitement of the old system by removing any sense of danger; you should absolutely NOT be able to undo any mistakes in an adventure game like this. More importantly, being able to save scum let's you brute force your way through levels which leads to people not learning how to play the game. I've seen tons of evidence of this myself from watching people try to stream the remastered version; the controls of this game, influenced by Prince of Persia, are extremely precise and good if you take the time to learn them, but they are not very intuitive. If you don't properly learn them, you will not enjoy the game. This is why a lot of people will say that this game's controls are "bad," they never learned how to play it properly. And without a save system that punishes you and forces you to make use of tools like the careful walk, and learn how to setup jumps properly, people just don't learn, and won't experience the beauty of this game's proper experience. All that being said, I beg of you... PLEASE play only the console versions as your first experience of this game! It's the only way to properly experience it and understand it. This is an absolutely Incredible game. In my opinion, some of the best 3D level design ever seen, and that's impressive considering this is one of the very early major 3D platformers. Basing the game's gameplay on classic Prince of Persia was a very smart choice, that style of deliberate cinematic platforming works VERY well in 3D, and this is an incredible realization of that concept. Certainly far better than any other attempt to bring cinematic platforming to 3D, including by the Prince of Persia series itself. This game also benefits from a very nice atmosphere from an incredible soundtrack, and the way the soundtrack is used is also brilliant: being silent or ambient a lot of the time, with music only playing for reaching certain areas and events. It's really such a shame that very few other games use music this way, with Dark Souls maybe being the closest I can think of. Lara herself is an excellent cypher character for this sort of game, a very appealing character that is easy to inhabit. Despite what magazine covers at the time would have you believe, the real star of this game is the level design, not Lara herself. Just an incredible masterpiece game that everyone should play. Yes, the controls have a learning curve... so DO NOT play the PC version that lets you save anywhere! Do the tutorials, learn to play the game, and then enjoy one of the best exploration games ever done in 3D!
