This will be a different type of study group from our traditional one, but one that will enable broader participation at various levels. You can read along with us, you can ask questions in the chat, you can send us questions via patreon or connect with us on discord, or you can just watch the videos and hear from myself and Dr. Steven Osuna. Over recent years and recently there has been a lot of discussion and debate around Cedric Robinson's Black Marxism. Last year Mtume Gant and I hosted a series of discussions about Robinson’s in my view thoroughly dialectical, materialist, and anti-imperialist analysis of the US film industry Forgeries of Memory and Meaning (my personal favorite book of Cedric Robinson’s). Steven Osuna teaches, researches, and writes as an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at California State University, Long Beach. He is a scholar of political economy, racism, policing, and criminalization in the U.S., Mexico, and Central America. Osuna was born and raised in Echo Park, Los Angeles and is a son of Mexican and Salvadoran working-class migrants. With over 20 years of teaching in a public-school setting, Osuna is a professor and scholar because he believes public education is a terrain of ideological struggle that cannot be abandoned. His scholarship appears in journals such as Emancipations: A Journal of Critical Analysis, Race & Class, the Journal of World Systems Research, and edited volumes such as The Futures of Black Radicalism and Policing the Planet: Why the Policing Crisis Led to Black Lives Matter.
