In the far Northwest corner of Ecuador the border with Colombia is a maze of mangrove swamps, jungle, and wild frontier towns like San Lorenzo. This is the Afro-Ecuadorian corner of Ecuador, with a very different culture and history than the rest of the country. Here, fishermen and smugglers slip through the channels and estuaries in the humid jungle. This is one of the poorest regions of Ecuador, despite the fact that it is also one of the most productive places in the world for balsa, teak, and melina plantations. The food is amazing, the climate is hot and humid, and tourists are few and far between due to the history of crime and violence in this region.
