After a reasonably strenuous afternoon walking in the rain, and arriving at camp on dark, the other group had the fire going waiting for us, but what if we had to get one going? After 4 attempts with the hand drill all of which failed due to the damp, and one very close attempt with the flint (quartz in this case) and steel, success! The single piece of char cloth used was about the only dry thing about. I had that stored in a watertight container in my pack. Stringy bark is a reasonably common eucalyptus tree in NSW and is an excellent kindling material even when a little damp, if carefully harvested, even in the rain drier material can be found on the underside of branches and under the wet outer layer. Obviously our preparation could have been better and would of if the serious fire was not already lit. The spark was struck under the shelter of my fly. Whilst his was a fun experience, the challenge is still to successfully do it with a hand drill in the rain...
