The Evolution of a Celtic Knot

In this video I show you how to draw a Celtic knot that fits in a 1x1, 1x2, and 2x2 grid. These are the most basic, beginner knots in the art. There are no break lines in any of these designs. I begin by drawing the grid in pencil. Next, I put equal sized circles in the middle of each square and on all intersections EXCEPT for the corners. All that's left to do then is to connect the dots with alternating, perpendicular lines and watch as your knot takes shape! Then, to highlight the design of the knot, I like to outline them with a thin marker. For my first video I wanted to show you this simple evolution of how a basic Celtic knot evolves as it doubles in size. The key to drawing Celtic knots is setting up the proper grid. This grid does most of the work for you and dictates where to draw your lines! The second key to drawing great Celtic knots is patience! The slower you go, the straighter your lines will be and the better your knots will look. This is the part that I really love about making Celtic knots. Slowing down and focusing on my lines takes my mind off everything else and takes me to a state of zen. Here, time flies by as I am fully absorbed in the process.
