In this video Dr O'Donovan explains Insomnia. Insomnia is a common sleep disorder where people have difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or getting enough restful sleep, leading to daytime sleepiness and impaired functioning. It can be short-term, often related to stress or changes in routine, or chronic, potentially linked to other medical or psychiatric conditions. Symptoms of Insomnia: 1. Difficulty falling asleep. 2. Waking up frequently during the night. 3. Waking up too early and being unable to fall back asleep. 4. Feeling tired and unrefreshed after sleep. 5. Daytime fatigue and sleepiness. 6. Difficulty concentrating or remembering things. 7. Irritability and mood changes. Causes of Insomnia: Stress and anxiety: Psychological factors are a major trigger. Medical conditions: Certain illnesses, pain, or other sleep disorders can interfere with sleep. Lifestyle factors: Irregular sleep schedules, excessive caffeine or alcohol consumption, and lack of exercise can contribute to insomnia. Medications: Some medications can disrupt sleep patterns. Age: Insomnia is more common with age. Treatment for Insomnia: A. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I): This therapy helps individuals identify and change negative thoughts and behaviors related to sleep. B. Medications: Short-term use of sleeping pills may be prescribed, but they are not a long-term solution. C. Lifestyle changes: Establishing a regular sleep schedule, creating a relaxing bedtime routine, and optimizing the sleep environment are important. D. Addressing underlying conditions: Treating any medical or psychological conditions that may be contributing to insomnia is crucial.
