In this video, we will show you a top 10 list of the best X-rated movies ever made. The X rating was used by the MPAA or any film distributor that wanted to label adult movies. Not all of these movies, however, contained strongly implied sex. Some were labeled "X" because of graphic language or extreme violence. The ratings system in North American cinema has always been designed to protect certain audiences from seeing things that are deemed unsuitable for them. And that means when it comes to topics like sex and violence, they can often lead to that R rating being handed down, stopping young people from entering the cinema. But on occasion an even more extreme rating will need to be used in order to make it clear this is a particularly challenging work. And that’s where the X rating comes into play. Of course today the X rating is more commonly associated with pornography. But that wasn’t always the case. No, back during the late sixties and early seventies it would be used to denote that films like Midnight Cowboy, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, and A Clockwork Orange were not to be viewed lightly as they may have a negative effect on any audience looking to check them out. Hell, it was this line of thinking which even led to some X rated movies eventually being outright banned in places like the UK. And those X ratings would continue to be handed out in the decade which followed. Yes, it was in the eighties that movies like Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! and The Evil Dead all found themselves getting that dreaded rating. That said, as time has gone on the practice of doing this seems to have fallen to the wayside, probably because all it did was make people want to seek them out more.
