In this video I do a little walk around in my backyard showing some of the so called weeds that are growing there that are actually edible and medicinal. It's my opinion that weeds don't exist as a type if plant. Rather any kind of plant you don't want is a "weed," but they're all plants. It just depends on what you want at the time. Lambsquarters, Wild Spinach, Goosefoot - Chenopodium album Lambsquarters, sometimes spelled Lamb's-Quarters, or Wild Spinach is a Wild edible plant found throughout North America. It's scientific name is Chenopodium album. It is also sometimes known as goosefoot, fat hen, and pigweed. Common Mallow - Malva neglecta. This is another edible and medicinal plant. Common Mallow can be found in yards, gardens, roadsides, railroads and other disturbed areas. It is found throughout the Okanagan, BC, the Pacific Northwest, across southern Canada and across most of North America. Common Mallow is an introduced species that is native to Europe. Catnip - Nepeta cataria Catnip is a plant that is edible and has been used as a medicine. The young leaves can be eaten raw or in salads, and the leaves can be used to make tea. Catnip has also been used for medicinal applications such as calming the stomach, soothing the nervous system, calming hyperactivity, and relieving insomnia. Dandelion - Taraxacum officinale An edible and medicinal plant found all over North America. Mullein – Verbascum thapsus Other names – common, woolly, or great mullein Applications – medicinal Identification: Mullein has a two year growth cycle. During the first year it grows as a basal rosette of densely hairy leaves that are 4 to 15 inches long. The leaves are lance-shaped with round toothed edges or smooth edges. Great Burdock - Arctium lappa This plant is edible but very bitter and not very often eaten. It also has medicinal properties. Purslane- Portulaca oleracea Purslane is a succulent growing as a weed all over North America. It is absolutely loaded with nutrients and delicious! Sow Thistle - Sonchus spp. An edible and medicinal plant. Oregon-Grape or Tall Oregon-Grape - Mahonia aquifolium or Berberis aquifolium Oregon-Grape grows in BC and in other parts of the Pacific Northwest specifically Idaho and Montana. The fruit and flowers are edible. Young leaves are also edible raw or cooked. The plant also has some medicinal properties. Please consume wild plants at your own risk!
