(11 Jan 1997) Arabic/Nat Some 500 Hamas followers rallied in Ramallah, West Bank, Saturday in memory of Yehiya Ayyash, known as "the Engineer", who allegedly was slain by Israeli intelligence last year. During the rally, a model Israeli bus like those attacked last Spring by a militant Islamic suicide bomber in Jerusalem were filled with fire crackers and set ablaze. The blasts were suspected to have been carried out in response to Ayyash's death. The Hamas rally at Bir-Zeit University, Ramallah, Saturday, was held in memory of Hamas leader Yehiya Ayyash, known as "the Engineer", who was killed a year ago. A model Israeli bus filled with fire crackers was set ablaze. The dummy bus was painted with the name of the Israeli bus company and the number "18". Two buses on the Jerusalem route "18" were attacked last Spring by a militant Islamic suicide bomber in Jerusalem. The blasts were suspected to have been carried out in response to the death of Ayyash, allegedly killed by Israeli intelligence. About 500 students gathered at Bir-Zeit University, the same in which Ayyash studied engineering. The students chanted the name of Ayyash and proclaimed him a martyr.
