315s, 332s and 143s for Scrap, Shorter trains and a missing carriage! South Wales Main Line 14th, 15th and 17th December 2020 With the new timetable from 14th December, GWR reinstated the Paddington to Cardiff central services between the existing hourly Paddington to Swansea trains. For whatever reason the Cardiff services are formed of 5-car Class 800 IETs with the Swansea trains occasionally also running with only 5-car sets. Also on GWR, one of the Castle sets has been running with only 3 carriages between the normal pair of Class 43 power cars instead of the normal 4. Ironically on the days I saw the set it was being used on Penzance - Cardiff - Penzance services - 246 miles each way. Highlight of the week has been the number of EMUs and DMUs going for scrap. A pair of Class 315s from Ilford, the first in Transport for London livery, went to Sims scrapyard at Newport as did a pair of Class 332 EMUs from Heathrow Express. The surprise came on Thursday 17th when three Class 143 DMUs were sent by GWR under their own power from Exeter for stripping and presumably scrapping at Chrysalis Rail at the former Landore TMD, Swansea.
