Red-cockaded Woodpecker: Habitat Requirements and Natural History

Join Wild Virginia's Habitat Connectivity Program Director, Trapper Fowler to learn more about the federally threatened Red-cockaded woodpecker (RCW). This talk will focus on the RCWs natural history and habitat requirements. RCWs were once a more common species, including in Virginia. Currently in Virginia the bird's range is restricted to Sussex County and the City of Chesapeake, primarily due to habitat loss and fire suppression. Trapper is a trained and Certified Wildlife Biologist®, who has managed and monitored state protected lands in South and North Carolina for this keystone species. During this webinar expect to learn more about how to identify this species amongst other "red" headed woodpeckers, why prescribed fire is crucial for its habitat management, and what cooperative breeding strategy means for this species. Trapper will highlight unique defense mechanisms this bird uses to combat nest predation. We will also discuss strategies biologists use to bolster RCW populations, that requires climbing trees, and why habitat connectivity is important for the survival of this woodpecker.
