Amy Fryer, Ellie's mom: “So my friend said, ‘I think she’s crooked,’ one day. And I said, ‘Oh, gosh, no, she’s 12, she’s turning 13 in a couple weeks. There’s an attitude that comes with being 13, and that’s her hip that goes out every time she says something.’” She took Ellie to the pediatrician anyway, and at first the doctor didn’t notice anything, either. But she took an X-ray to ease their minds and then called with bad news: Ellie had a severe S curve in her spine and needed to go see an orthopedic surgeon. Viral Jain, MD, Pediatric spine surgeon: “The spinal fusion surgery makes your spine rigid forever, and so, for a competitive athlete, that’s a disadvantage. But on the other hand, if someone who is as motivated as Ellie is, um, they can make their recovery really, really quick.” Amy: “It’s scary from a parent’s perspective to make sure that you’re making the right choice.” Mark Fryer, Ellie's dad: “I struggled with it all the way up to the day of surgery. As a father, we’re always trying to think into the future as to decisions we’re making today are going to impact someone the rest of their life. Kind of sharing that with Dr. Jain and kind of weighing those options, with his experience and all the studies and surgeries he’s done, you know, he just really recognized that the longer-term ramifications of not doing it were going to outweigh the potential risks of doing something sooner.” Dr. Jain wasn’t sure Ellie would be able to perform in sports the way she had in the past or even if she could do a flip turn again in the water. But Ellie was determined to return to competitive sports and be healthier than ever. Ellie Fryer, 15, Scoliosis patient: “I think just my whole life I’ve always wanted to be the best I can be, so just the idea of not being able to be the best I can be, I didn’t like. So I just wanted to make sure that I could do everything that I wanted to do.” Ellie: “I’m not going to hold myself back just because I have rods and screws.
