Nearly every time there's a bad noise on set sabotaging our dialogue recording, some wiseguy will jokingly say "ADR". To pros that take pride in clean dialogue tracks, that is unacceptable especially since most of the time it's quick and easy to fix the problem on set. For years I've jokingly said that the sound department is so efficient that we could get all of our work for the day done in 10-15 minutes then go home but we're stuck on set all day waiting on everyone else to do their part. While this is silly banter, there is a part of this that is true as well. Instead of making someone prep a scene for ADR and require actors to go into a recording studio during off hours - months later to speak their dialogue again into a microphone while watching their performance on screen... we can record their audio on set right after the Director has the scene in the can, and save everyone a lot of time and money.
