The former Qualcomm Stadium station on the San Diego Trolley Green Line officially reopened as of last Saturday (9/3/2022), and the crowd of people on the Trolley desperately trying to beat the traffic and get to the 1:00pm Scrimmage Game was enormous. Closed in 2019 just prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic, "Stadium" station was originally one of the last eastbound stops on the Blue Line Trolley's Mission Valley extension in the late 1990s, but the Green Line officially took over as the primary service to this station in 2010 when the Trolley System was revamped. In 2018, after a controversial debate involving San Diego's Chargers football team abandoning us for Los Angeles because they wanted a bigger site than Qualcomm but the City couldn't meet the demand, the SDSU Community and San Diego voters overall were charged with deciding the fate of the abandoned sports complex. The votes were cast, SDSU got the rights to the property and, in 2019, moved forward with their plans to develop the new SDSU West or SDSU Mission Valley Campus. Stadium station was subsequently closed when construction began and the original Qualcomm Stadium was torn down. Upon its official reopening, I took a quick tour of the station itself and interviewed a few people to get their thoughts of being able to take the Trolley to the new SnapDragon Stadium instead of driving. This is my first on-site video, so I apologize for the shakiness and occasionally poor audio quality. I am hoping to get better video equipment and do more videos like this.
