Cuaba - Exclusivos Cigar Review

The Cuaba is a "Gem brand" to find in the Cuban circuit, and a shape that looks great and stands out in any humidor. The Exclusivos is a vitola of 5,5/8" x 48 ring gauge. Small batches are made and distributed to selected retailers, and holds very little market share - because of that, it is often referred to as a local brand. Pre-light: Loose wrap and medium veins, with a great rustic appearance. A sweet cinnamon and fruit aroma. First: Once it opened up after the initial light; I got notes of hay, butter, cedar, almond, earth and nougat. Smooth and creamy on the retro-hale, with floral and fruity foot smoke. Second: It had nice white and gray ash that held on well. The strength picked up, with notes of graham, cinnamon, dry fruit and some hay. Some spice came and went (just to tickle the senses) Third: The same notes of cinnamon and hay. Coffee and raisin showed up at the end, and the build up quickly took over after. Overall: Great construction (after I even dropped the cigar on the ground before filming). Huge plumes of smoke from both the draw and foot. A very pleasant bouquet aroma, with great ash color and construction. History: The idea behind the Cuaba brand was the work of creator Carlos Gonzales. This "post revolutionary brand is one of a few brands started in the late 1990's. All vitolas in the lines consist of "Perfectos" or "Double figurados". In the early 20th century, the perfecto was the must have vitola. Some time around the 1950's it started to fade. This brand was designed with the sole purpose of resurrecting a once popular shape. Habanos SA President (at the time) Francisco Linares launched the Cuaba brand on November 19, 1996, at London's "Claridge Hotel" in the UK. Carlos Gonzales (creator of the brand), along with 14 other "Level 7" "Torcedores" (cigar rollers) put on demonstrations at the release party. The cigars in the boxes were miss-shaped due to the molds not being ready in time. Thus making those particular boxes a great collectors item. The tobaccos used is from the "Vuelta Abajo" in "Pinar del Rio" long filler, hand made. They use only Level 7 or higher rollers, with a range of medium to full strength. The blend has been said to be "modeled after the Montecristo brand". And, "some connoisseurs believe Romeo y Julieta is a better representation". I hope you have a chance to enjoy one!
