Silver Sands of Morar are magical beaches next to the little town of Morar in the north-western part of the Lochaber area, only 1-hour drive from Fort William and 10 minutes from Mallaig ferry crossing. There is a little confusion over the naming of these beaches. Commonly Silver Sands of Morar is the name of all beaches between Morar and Arisaig, however, according to Google, these are mostly beaches around Morar Bay. But even in this narrowed area which we visited this time with our kayak, there are several separate beaches, each with its unique name: on the southern side of the Morar River lies Morar Beach (the most famous one and usually associated with the Silver Sands name) and Tougal Beach, on northern side are Bourblach Beach and Sgeir Dubh (Black Rock) Beach. What is distinct about these four beaches, in opposition to other beaches in the area, is that they are not located directly on the ocean shore, but on the banks of Morar River and Morar Bay. On the other hand, they share similar features to all other beaches in this area: amazing quality silvery-white sand, the magical colour of water, and incredible views of Isle of Skye, Isle of Eigg, and Rum. The water of most of these beaches is quite shallow, apart from the river bed, where it drops quite treacherously. Additionally, it is important to remember that tidal conditions can cause strong undercurrents and whirlpools in places where the river meets the ocean water. The best places for swimming are Tougal Beach and Sgeir Dubh Beach while on the most popular Morar Beach caution is recommended. It is also a great place for kayaking and canoeing - paddling from one beach to another is super fun. The car park is not too large, but extremely busy, especially during nice weather.
