Gaura Purnima, observed on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, celebrates the divine appearance of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. A revered figure in Gaudiya Vaishnavism, He is considered the "Golden Avatar" of Lord Krishna, who descended to inaugurate the congregational chanting of the holy names—the Sankirtan movement—to spread pure love of God (bhakti) to all, regardless of background. Lord Chaitanya appeared in 1486 AD in Navadvipa, West Bengal, during a lunar eclipse. He is credited with establishing the Sankirtana Movement, which promotes the congregational chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra as the primary spiritual practice for the current age (Kali Yuga). His teachings emphasize pure love of God (Bhakti) and humility. Major festivities are held at ISKCON Mayapur, the birthplace of Lord Chaitanya, where thousands of devotees gather for weeks of cultural programs and pilgrimages.
