Wide shot of a drone operator and equipment 5. SOUNDBITE: (Ukrainian) Drakar (call-sign), Commander of a group that works with interceptor drones: “I wouldn't call it a primitive device, it is a high-tech device, but it's much cheaper. Well, war is economics, we understand that. And if we shoot down a cheaper product with a much more expensive one, then the economics doesn't work in our favour. But if we shoot it down with a weapon that is dozens times cheaper than the enemy's, then that's right. That's cool.” 6. Various of a soldier assembling an interceptor drone 7. SOUNDBITE: (Ukrainian) Drakar (call-sign), Commander of a group that works with interceptor drones: “I think this is something we can help our allies with, because we understand that Iran, North Korea, and Russia are all part of the same axis of evil that provokes wars, including the one in our country. We understand their goal of destroying Ukraine and, basically, Western civilisation and the Western world. Therefore, of course, we are on the same side of the barricades with our allies so to speak, we will help them and, of course, we hope that they will help us.” 8. Close-up of a communication antenna 9. Wide shot of communication antenna being set up 10. SOUNDBITE: (Ukraine) Drakar (call-sign), Commander of a group that works with interceptor drones: “I think it will not be very easy, because every pilot we have who is switching to work with anti-aircraft drones already has some experience with drones, one way or another. They normally have worked with regular FPV (first person view) drones and so on. It will be much more difficult to teach someone from scratch. But I think they will succeed.” 11. Interceptor drone in air STORYLINE: Ukrainian instructors from a private company demonstrated an interceptor drone developed to hunt down Shahed drones Wednesday in the Kyiv region as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said a Ukrainian team was on its way to Gulf countries to help strengthen defenses as tensions escalate following Iranian attacks. Interceptor drones are part of Ukraine’s ongoing effort to develop low-cost defenses against the waves of Iranian-designed Shahed drones that Russia launches at Ukrainian cities in nightly attacks across the country. The drone, known as the “Bullet,” was developed by the Ukrainian company General Cherry specifically to counter loitering munitions such as the Shaheds. The interceptor drone can reach speeds of up to 310 kilometers per hour (198 miles per hour), stay in the air for about 25 minutes and carry a payload of up to 0.8 kilograms. The system costs about $2,100, while a single Shahed drone is estimated to cost from around $30,000 up to $150,000.This means the interceptor can neutralize the target at a fraction of the price making it more cost-effective. “I wouldn't call it a primitive device, it is a high-tech device, but it's much cheaper,” said Drakar, a commander whose group works with the Bullet interceptors countering Shaheds. Drakar goes only by his call-sign in line with military protocol. “War is economics, we understand that. And if we shoot down a cheaper product with a much more expensive one, then the economics doesn't work in our favour. But if we shoot it down with a weapon that is dozens times cheaper than the enemy's, then that's right,” Drakar added. But Drakar cautioned that deploying the technology is not a simple process.
