Leviticus now pauses over a national wound—“after the death of the two sons of Aaron.” In the shadow of Nadab and Abihu’s judgment, God reveals the Day of Atonement, a yearly path back into His presence for the whole people. Isaiah shows a king on the brink, crying out for rescue. Luke shows a woman with a broken past drawing near to Jesus with tears and perfume. When failure and death are close at hand, is there really a way back? Discussion Questions: 1. In Leviticus 16, why must both the people and the sanctuary be cleansed? What does that reveal about the nature of sin? 2. How does Jesus in Luke 7:36–50 embody the meaning of the two goats — both cleansing and carrying away sin? 3. Why is Simon troubled by the woman’s nearness to Jesus? What does his reaction reveal about his understanding of holiness? 4. What allows the woman to approach Jesus with boldness, when access to God in Leviticus 16 was so restricted? 5. After seeing both passages, how should atonement shape the way we respond to those marked by visible sin — and to our own?
