A young athlete takes a hard hit to the head during a game. He laughs it off, says he’s fine, and walks to the sidelines. Forty-five minutes later, he’s unconscious — fighting for his life. This is the silent killer known as epidural hematoma — a brain bleed that can turn from harmless to fatal in under an hour. With rapid evacuation, many patients may make a full recovery in comparison to the severe neurological deficits or death they might otherwise have otherwise suffered. We must keep in mind that although we use the term full recovery, there may be other cognitive, emotional and other behavioral issues which may occur.
