Capitol Peak via the Northeast Ridge (Class 4) Date: 09/12/2021 Starting Time: 04:00 am Trailhead: Capitol Lake (11,600 ft.) Distance: 4.4 miles (round trip) Total climbing: 2,600 ft. Duration: 8 hours (round trip) Capitol Peak is located in the Elk Mountains and ranks no. 31 among the Colorado 14ers (based on NAVD88). It was officially named Capitol Mountain by the Hayden Survey in 1873 for the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. because of the peak’s dome-like shape. Capitol Peak was officially first summited by Percy Hagerman and Harold Clark via the Northeast Ridge on August 22, 1908. Carl Blaurock was the first to summit Capitol Peak via the Class 5.9 Northwest Ridge in 1937. Today's official standard route along Capitol Peak's Northeast Ridge is considered to be one of the most difficult standard routes on a Colorado 14er due to its exposed terrain with the Knife Edge being the most hazardous section on the route.
