Island villages with ostrich-like raised-floor warehouses / Walk around the island village, Amami Islands, Northern Amami Oshima (Kagoshima Prefecture) Amami Oshima, the largest island in the Amami Islands in southern Kagoshima Prefecture, is the third largest after Okinawa Island and Sado. It is made up of Palaeozoic strata, with many mountains, including Yuwandake (694m) at its highest point, and the coast is subsiding, making it an island with many inlets and outlets. Since the Shimazu clan took control of the Ryukyu Islands in 1609 (Keicho 14), it has belonged to the Satsuma Domain, and since the Meiji era it has belonged to Kagoshima Prefecture. The northern part of the island is centered around Naze, and the southern part is centered around Koniya. Sugarcane, papaya, and pineapple cultivation, as well as bonito fishing, are thriving, and the traditional industry of Oshima Tsumugi silk is famous. Amami Oshima is a region that is frequently hit by typhoons, and is subtropical, making it humid. In order to adapt to these climates and geographical features, distinctive house layouts and dwellings were created. The floors are raised (over 60cm) to prevent moisture, logs are placed between the pillars under the floor to prevent the house from being lifted by the wind, and so-called "udoko" are used. The walls are high and the roofs are gently sloping, the house forest serves as a windbreak, and there are also raised-floor warehouses, or "takakura." Naze The central city of the northern part of Amami Oshima is Naze. It is not as big as Naha in Okinawa, but it is a large city for an island. The port is a deep, natural inlet, and the central city is at its deepest point, stretching out on both sides of the bay. The central city has a typical inlet topography, with the port in front and the mountain slopes behind it like a folding screen. When viewed from the port, the administrative and business district is in the center, the shopping district is on the left (east), and the entertainment district is on the right (west). Naze, like Okinawa, is thought to have suffered extensive damage during the war, and there are no old pre-war buildings. However, you can encounter neighborhoods with shopping streets and entertainment districts that reflect the character of the town, even though it was built after the war. Akina Akina, Tatsugo-cho, is a village facing the East China Sea. When I visited in 2011, there was a rare thatched-roofed storehouse still in use. It was the only one I could find on the entire island, other than the preserved one at Yamatohama. However, in 2024, it was gone. There were also several buildings in the village that had their roofs removed and remodeled. Although the stone walls surrounding the houses remained in one place, the townscape was made of block walls, and many of the main houses were separate buildings. However, the roofs had been re-roofed with corrugated iron. Akakina Akakina, Kasari-cho, is the center of Kasari-cho in the northernmost part of Oshima, and was once the site of the magistrate's office. Perhaps because of this background, there are rows of impressive houses like those found in the foothills of Kagoshima Prefecture, and the hedges and garden trees are neatly trimmed. It can be said that Akagi-na is unique. There are several ostrich-style high storehouses in the village with low roofs and metal folded sheet roofs, all of which are found on large plots of land. 集落町並みWalker http://www.shurakumachinami.natsu.gs/...
