Guangfu South Road: The Arcade Corridor Where Time Stands Still This road, only about 500 meters long, is a "living specimen" for interpreting the history of old Xiguan. Its predecessor was the 14th Pu and 15th Pu roads from the Qing Dynasty. Its current name originated in 1931 to commemorate the 1911 Revolution overthrowing the Qing rule, meaning "recovering the lost nation". In 2023, it was listed in the First Batch of Guangzhou Protected Place Names, officially recognizing its historical value. Strolling here, you are surrounded by Lingnan style: well-preserved two-story arcade buildings line both sides, cobblestone pavement remains on some sections, and side alleys like Xirong Lane and Yangren Lane extend east-west like fishbones, forming the typical fabric of traditional Guangzhou streets. Once a famous copperware district known as "Dutong Street", it has now transformed into an agglomeration of garment wholesale markets and traditional shops, where ancient trees and shop signs create a picturesque scene. As the core axis of the Guangfunan Historic and Cultural District, it is undergoing "acupuncture-style" revitalization, aiming to upgrade its commercial ecology while preserving its traditional features and continuing its six-century-old mercantile heritage. Liwan Plaza: The Modern Landmark Witnessing Trends In stark contrast to the antiquity of Guangfu South Road is Liwan Plaza, located at the bustling entrance of Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street. This large-scale modern commercial-residential complex, built in the late 1990s and covering over 40,000 square meters, was once hailed as having one of the largest shopping malls in Southeast Asia and served as one of Guangzhou's earliest commercial landmarks. At the turn of the century, it was a trendsetting hub, teeming with crowds, and its property prices once far exceeded those in the then-developing Tianhe District. However, with shifts in urban commercial patterns and the rise of the internet economy, Liwan Plaza has experienced ups and downs. Today, it has successfully transformed into a nationally renowned wholesale and retail center for jewelry, jade, crystals, and colored gemstones, hosting over 2,000 shops, including more than 600 specializing in crystals. The recent rise in "crystal fever" has attracted fashion enthusiasts and buyers from across the country to hunt for treasures here. Despite various urban legends surrounding its architectural appearance, the reality is a vibrant, bustling professional market filled with the energy of commerce.
