One of the most unappreciated jazz bands was the John Scofield Trio with Steve Swallow and Adam Nussbaum. They were around from 1980 to 1983 and gigged mostly in Europe because they couldn't find work in the USA. When his trio failed to get any traction, Sco moved on to the jazz-rock-funk style in 1984 that caught Miles Davis's ears. But that band was an amazing improvising machine that had a repertoire of Scofield and Swallow tunes that ranged from harmonically sophisticated ballads to flat-out rockers (e.g., Shinola). The band was able to have a full sound in no small part due to Swallow's unusual style of bass playing, which included a lot of strumming of chords, comping almost like a rhythm guitarist but an octave lower, and taking solos that sounded more in style like an octave-lower guitar than a bass. I never got to see that legendary band, but for one night in March 1985 I came close when I went to see the Paul Bley Group at Lush Life. I decided to go after seeing the ad for the gig listing Bley with Scofield, Swallow and Barry Altschul. Swallow and Altschul had played a lot with Bley in the 1960s, but to see them back together with the bonus of Scofield was too much to miss. The big surprise of the night, though, was that Bley let Scofield and Swallow open each set with two tunes of just the two of them playing, in a reprise of sorts of the at that time recently defunct trio. That is what you have here. I will upload the two Bley sets in their entirety, but thought that pulling together the four Sco/Swallow tunes from the two sets in one posting was warranted. Feast your ears on this music I have enjoyed privately for almost 40 years. 00:00 Holidays (J Scofield) 04:54 The Beatles (J Scofield) 11:38 Beckon Call (G Campbell) 18:03 Never (S Swallow) Recorded on a Sony Walkman TCS-350 with built-in stereo microphone.
