Suspect Tries Switching Seats After Fleeing Police

On July 16, 2025. A deputy from the Grant County Sheriff’s Department observed a vehicle with a loud exhaust and no license plates traveling at a high rate of speed. ​The deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop and the suspect vehicle began fleeing. The pursuit was quickly terminated due to heavy traffic and dispatch advised that a Platteville Police Officer may have the vehicle pulled over. The deputy responded to the scene and the Platteville Officer stated that he saw a male in the driver seat traveling at a high rate of speed. The officer explained that he also saw a female in the passenger seat and tried to stop the vehicle, but quickly lost sight of it. ​ He stated that he located the vehicle again and that the female was in the driver seat. ​ The deputy made contact with the male later identified as Marcus. The deputy asked Marcus if they saw him as they sped past at a high rate of speed. Marcus said they did but stated that his girlfriend Kassidy was driving. Marcus then began changing his story, stating that he was driving, then later stating that he was not. He then explained the shifter broke in the car so that was why they switched drivers. While speaking with Marcus,​ the deputy observed a THC vape on the floorboard of the car. Marcus said it was old and that it was not his. The deputy then asked Kassidy if she saw him when they sped past. Kassidy said that she did and that she was the one driving. She then stated that she just started to learn how to drive stick shift,​ which was why she was going so fast. ​Kassidy was then asked if she saw the red and blue lights, she responded that she did not because “my hat went over my head because the window was down”. Marcus was then ordered out of the vehicle and frisked for weapons. The more Marcus spoke the less sense his story made. Officers searched the vehicle and located two empty one ounce bottles of Fireball Whiskey along with the THC vape found earlier. Eventually, Marcus stated “Ok, I was driving” and admitted to driving the whole time. He explained that he was just about to get his license back and was scared so he fled. Marcus said ​Kassidy only began driving at the end and pulled over right away when the Platteville officer initiated a traffic stop again. The deputy read Marcus his Miranda rights and secured him in handcuffs. He was then placed in a squad car while the deputy spoke with Kassidy. Kassidy admitted to lying earlier and stated that Marcus was the one driving. ​ She initially denied seeing the red and blue lights but later said she did and stated that she told Marcus,​ “There’s a cop.” She said Marcus was going really fast and drove over a round about which broke the shifter on the car. ​ Kassidy said Marcus pulled over to fix the shifter,​ which is when they switched seats. ​ She said she drove a short distance before the Platteville Officer stopped her. The deputy asked Kassidy why she lied about being the driver earlier. ​She explained that her relationship with Marcus had not been the best recently and thought if she could help him not to go jail, that it would help. ​ Kassidy started to cry and said “ I don’t want to be put in this situation again just because of this stupid guy.” The deputy then asked Kassidy to exit the vehicle and told her she was under arrest for obstructing. ​ She was secured in handcuffs and placed into a squad car. Both ​Marcus and Kassidy were transported to the Grant County Jail and released to jail staff. Marcus was found guilty for: Vehicle Operator Flee/Elude Officer 2nd-Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety Reckless Driving-Endanger Safety Operating While Revoked Marcus was sentenced to 18 months in jail, 3 years of probation, and he was required to pay $1,905 in fines. Kassidy was found guilty for Resisting or Obstructing an Officer. She was sentenced to 1 year of probation and ordered to pay a $443 fine. This video is for educational purposes only.
