It involves admitting and discharging surgical patients on the same day. It has evolved from mainly minor routine procedures on healthier patients to increasingly include complex procedures and patients. IFC’s Healthcare Benchmarking analysis shows that day case surgery is under-developed in emerging markets. Increasing day case rates offers significant potential benefits: reduced costs, shorter hospital stays, fewer hospital-acquired infections, and improved outcomes. Importantly it can also improve capacity utilization, which is especially pertinent in emerging markets where hospital infrastructure and skilled staff are in short supply.
