As the name indicates, incisional hernias are hernias that occur at the site of previous operations. For some reason, the abdominal wall, which was closed during the operation has not healed properly and there is a defect in the abdominal wall. The area where the hernia occurs, the patient experience a bulge on coughing, sneezing or any straining factor or even while standing or even spontaneously completely disappears on lying down. This is the symptom of an incisional hernia, that is a bulge at the site of the operated scar and this gradually becomes bigger and bigger and more serious problems can occur. So this incisional hernias, there are two reasons why the patient can have symptoms, one is because of the defect and the hernia, which can become very huge, they become very unsightly and the second reason why he becomes symptomatic is the content s of the hernia. If the content s happen to be intestine, if they are outside and they get stuck outside, they may give rise to what we call as intestinal obstruction or subacute intestinal obstruction and the patient will have some sort of an abdominal distention, repeated abdominal colic’s and even vomiting. Infact he may even go into complete total obstruction too. The question is how do we stop this incisional hernias? This incisional hernias happen due to healing defects in the incision, the surgical incision which was made and this can happen due to infection at the time of the surgery or due to some straining factors in the post-operative period. So if you can avoid these straining factors such as chronic cough, and constipation during the post-operative period, it is likely that the chances of hernia are less. Having said that the healing ability also of the patient makes a significant factor in the scar formation and the defect formation. So to a certain extent the hernias can be prevented but, as a whole there are no preventive measures to stop hernia from occurring.
