Forging a horse shoe necklace

Part two of the Teikka project. In the first piece we took part of Teikka’s old horseshoe and forged it into a hoof pick so Adam and Brooke could carry a piece of that story forward with their new horses. In this part of the project we did something a little different. Instead of transforming the steel into something completely new, we preserved the horseshoe itself. Using the tip of the shoe, I drew the steel out into a longer bar, worked the shape, and then forged the details back into it, putting the fuller back in and chiseling the nail holes so the character of the horseshoe remains. The end result is a horseshoe pendant made from Teikka’s actual shoe. Now Brooke has a piece she can wear and keep close to her heart, something that carries the memory of a very special horse. That’s one of the beautiful things about craft. Steel holds stories. With a little heat, a little time, and a little intention, those stories can be carried forward in new ways.
