Brownells Gun Techs™ Caleb and Steve are back to put another item of "received wisdom" about the AR-15 through the Truth Detector. You may have read it on forums or in the social medias - folks saying you should always use a STEEL barrel nut on your AR-15 because aluminum and titanium barrel nuts are inferior. Is this true? The barrel nut, of course, locks the barrel into the upper receiver, but this juncture is not subject to high stress or pressure. Many handguards require their own special barrel nut, but the job the nut does for the barrel is always the same. And the good news is aluminum and titanium are MORE than strong enough to retain the barrel securely. High-end makers of parts and complete AR-15 rifles, like Geissele and Battle Arms Development, make aluminum barrel nuts. And a barrel nut made from a lightweight alloy certainly does help you keep the weight of gun down. So the myth that your AR-15's barrel nut has to be made of steel is BUSTED. An aluminum or titanium barrel nut is just fine!
