JOIN BROADCAST PLAZA TODAY, DISCORD'S MEDIA DISCUSSION COMMUNITY — http://bit.ly/S31MA 10pm news open taken from Circle City-owned CW affiliate WISH-TV in Indianapolis, Indiana. Recorded on Wednesday, January 11, 2023. I had already posted the breaking news variant of the open, but this is the normal version of the open, and this generic open is used on all newscasts. On Monday, January 9th, the station debuted a modified set (mainly a new seamless monitor wall and redesigned desk that kind of undoes the "corner set" design but otherwise is the same set). Along with that, they debuted new graphics. As part of the transition-out agreement with Nexstar, they were allowed to retain their NDC-2 graphics package for an unspecified period of time, but eventually had to switch to something. This is the result of that agreement. The graphics are a heavily modified version of the WJAX/WFOX RenderOn package, mainly with the colors changed around to match the existing color palette the station has been using. They also retained the Barlow font from the previous package, which is so heavily ingrained in their overall station look at this point that it made sense to keep it. They did keep the Nexstar-era ticker/bug, and the lower thirds in the new package were designed to line up with the existing ticker. Based on the comments from my last video, people either love or hate these graphics — there is absolutely no in between, which makes sense given how fragmented opinions on news graphics design are. I know a lot of people prefer the 3D look that has fallen out of favor in the past few years (which is the main reason why RenderOn's work is nowhere near as popular as it used to be), while others prefer a simpler, cleaner design (which is where overall design trends have been for a while). Personally, I'm in the middle with these. I don't really mind the awesome bumps and intros here, but I can also see the appeal of flat design. I think this package is a good compromise between, it has nice 3D elements without being too busy. I also had no idea before watching this open that the station has picked up the slogan "Focused on Family and the Community" that owner DuJuan McCoy seems to have an affinity for (his former station WEVV originated it, and KADN/KLAF later used it as well). That said, I'm not surprised they picked it up either. I have no idea what it's supposed to mean but it just sounds cheap and doesn't tell me much about your product. What do you mean by being "focused on family"? Is it supposed to be family-friendly? Do they cover stories involving families? Of course these are rhetorical questions — the point being that the slogan doesn't make sense. They also picked up the Stephen Arnold "News 15" image campaign originally created for KADN and changed the lyrics to say "WISH-TV" instead of "News 15". If they wanted to convey a sense of community focus, the existing "Your Local News Source" slogan did a fine job of it. The same music (In-Sink V.5) and voiceover artist (Erik Tobias) are retained. Anchors are Alexis Rogers, Phil Sanchez, and chief meteorologist Ashley Brown. ©2023 Circle City Broadcasting and WISH-TV, no copyright infringement intended.
