About a year ago I was trying to learn some piece I wanted to record on flute - I don't even remember what it was anymore - when I decided it was taking too long and I should learn some other piece I could finish more quickly in the meantime. I vaguely recalled Secret of Evermore having some really nice flute-suitable music, so I browsed the soundtrack, found the Hall of Collosia theme, remembered how meditative and beautiful it was, and decided to learn it. I don't know why I thought it would be easy, but suffice it to say I didn't finish it quickly. It exposed so many weakness of my flute playing. When I started I couldn't even really consistently sustain a good E6, let alone slur up to one after a rapid passage starting in the lowest octave. I'd never even thought about alternate fingerings, but for this piece I used several. There's still a lot here I don't like, but when I compare to the attempt I recorded half a year ago, I feel pretty good about how far I've come. I was reluctant to post this with all the nits I could pick, but I need to finally move on from this piece. I hope in a year or two I'll be able to look back and feel I've come a long way from this, but also be able to look past everything I want to redo and be satisfied with having shared a performance of this enchanting piece from Jeremy Soule's first major work.
