Hey guys, today's episode will hopefully help you hear the difference between Monel Strings (Martin) and Thomastik Benson round wound nickel strings when the guitar is plugged in. Please share your thoughts. My opinion is that I like the nickel round best, since they bring back a definition and attack on the 4 wound strings that I didn't have on the models. And I like articulate bass strings, so the models were ok acoustically but didn't work for me on that specific guitar (1936 Gibson L5 Advanced, X braced) with that pickup (1950s DeArmond Mike). I like bright electric sound, but the Mike is a little too muddy on that guitar. I thought it was mainly due to the guitar voice and the pickup (those Mike tend to be fat and bluesy, and a little less precise than the later Rythm Chiefs) but the sound changed a lot when changing strings, in the good direction (well, not the "good" for every body, but the one I like). In the end, my favorite pickups always end up to be the brighter ones (Mccarty pickup, as seen on my 1936 L12, and the deArmond Rythm chief). You'll find a link at the end of the video to Celia, another AS I've recorded on the same guitar and mike and amp, but trying to compare bronze strings and flat wounds on that specific guitar. The guitar is plugged into a 1969 Fender Princeton Reverb, I'm using a Dunlop Tortex pick 1.5mm, and the sound is captured by both a Neumann TLM 103 and a bluebird, in front of the amp. The amp settings are 5 bass, 5 Trebles, and I didn't use any EQ in the editing on the computer.
