Experts in Indigenous Studies, U.S. History, Federal Indian Law, and the Tribal Chairman from the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe of the Oceti Sakowin (Seven Council Fires) of the Great Sioux Nation, convened for a panel at Harvard University: The Dakota Access Pipeline in Historical Perspective. Sponsored jointly by the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History and the Harvard University Native American Program, the panel presented the long continuum of Oceti Sakowin, or Great Sioux Nation and its struggles to protect traditional Lakota and Dakota Territory through 19th and 20th century military and courtroom battles culminating in the current youth-led Mni Wiconi (Water Is Life) movement based in prayer and nonviolent direct action to protect Mni Sose, or the Missouri River.
