What is inguinal hernia, its causes, symptoms, treatment, complications, and prevention? Inguinal hernia is more common in the male population, especially in children, particularly those born with a condition called groin hernia. Groin hernia occurs when testes, which develop in males, protrude from the abdomen just before birth. These testes descend towards the scrotum, and if the child is born earlier, they may remain inside the abdomen. This condition is more common on the right side, as the right testes tend to descend later compared to the left. In some cases, hernia may occur on one side, either right or left, or on both sides simultaneously. Recognizing hernia can be done when a child cries, and parents notice swelling in the groin area. As the child becomes quiet or sleeps, the swelling decreases, indicating a potential hernia. This swelling often resolves by itself, but if it recurs, it indicates a hernia. This diagnostic method is quite reliable for hernia, unlike many other diseases. If diagnosed, hernia usually requires surgery, especially in initial stages when the child is very young. Observation may suffice if there are no complications and the hernia is not causing significant discomfort. However, surgery becomes necessary as the child grows older. Hernia surgery can be performed traditionally or with advanced techniques. Advanced techniques, often using laparoscopy, offer finer precision, minimal scarring, and faster recovery. One common question is whether a mesh is used in hernia repair. Mesh is generally avoided in young children as their bodies are still growing, and mesh cannot grow along with them. Mesh is usually introduced after complete growth, when the height has stabilized. In cases where growth is ongoing, mesh is avoided to prevent complications. Another factor to consider after surgery is post-operative care, especially in very young children who cannot communicate discomfort easily. Chronic coughing, difficulty urinating, or chronic constipation should be monitored as they can increase the risk of hernia recurrence.
