But before learning about each of these muscle’s individual functions or actions, it’s important to remind ourselves first of their anatomy! The three medial plantar muscles are: Abductor hallucis, which has its origin at the calcaneal tuberosity, plantar aponeurosis and the superficial layer of the flexor retinaculum. Its tendon runs distally to the medial sesamoid bone of the great toe and inserts into the base of the proximal phalanx of the big toe. Adductor hallucis muscle, which has two heads: The transverse head originates at the 3rd to 5th metatarsophalangeal joint and the deep transverse metatarsal ligament; The oblique head arises at the cuboid bone, the lateral cuneiform bone and the bases of the 2nd to 4th metatarsal bones. Both heads form a common tendon, which runs along the lateral sesamoid bone of the great toe, and inserts at the base of the proximal phalanx of the big toe. Flexor hallucis brevis muscle: originates at the lateral cuneiform bone and cuboid bone. Its insertions are located at the base of the proximal phalanx of the great toe, via the the medial (medial head) and lateral (lateral head) sesamoid bones.
