It’s Peace Corps Week, and in celebration of our service and the uniqueness of serving while Black, I sat down with Ebben Wiley Bell to reflect on what that time meant and what we still carry with us today. Peace Corps was created by John F. Kennedy on March 1, 1961. Since then, nearly 250,000 volunteers have served in more than 144 countries. And overall, there are three simple goals for Peace Corps service. But any Returned Peace Corps Volunteer knows the third goal is in some ways our forever goal: helping to spread a better understanding of the countries and communities that took us in, taught us, nurtured us, exchanged laughs and kind moments. For Ebben and me, serving in West Africa and our first time leaving the U.S., shaped how we understand race, American identity, and belonging in a global context. That lens continues to inform how we move through the world today. What began as a thoughtful comment on one of my LinkedIn posts turned into a two-hour conversation on our Peace Corps experiences.
