Wide of activists including Assa Traoré (right, black t-shirt) whose brother Adama died while in police custody chanting slogans from back of truck 7. Wide of demonstration 8. SOUNDBITE (French) Imen Taoubas, demonstrator: "I trust the police for many things but there's an increase in the number of deaths for no good reason and that shouldn't happen. We deserve to be safe in our country, we pay our taxes, we have a right to be here. We're not going anywhere and this leads nowhere. It's a war waged in vain. But we will get along, we will eventually get on with each other. We have to. We're all sitting at the same table." 9. Mid of Mounia with flare atop truck 10. SOUNDBITE (French) Amira Taoubas, demonstrator: "Of course I'm scared for my four boys. I'm afraid of what might come next. I would like it to stop and that it never happens again. It's just not possible to die like this, for no reason. I wouldn't want it to happen to my own children. My eldest is 11. It could be him five years from now, dying from a gun wound. It's impossible, this needs to stop. This really needs to stop." 11. Wide of protest crowd outside prefecture 12. SOUNDBITE (French) Tracy Ladji, activist with SOS Racisme: "These are things that happen when you're French but with foreign roots. We're not considered French and they only look at the colour of our skin, where we come from even if we were born in France. And even so, you can't just kill someone for no reason so... racism within the police kills and way too many of them embrace far-right ideas so... this has to stop." 13. Wide of crowd chanting and filming and covering their nose from effects of teargas 14. SOUNDBITE (French) Dominique Sopo, President of SOS Racisme: "We have something here that resembles an execution even though we'll see what the investigation yields and what the justice system says. In the face of this, we can't simply call for things to calm down - of course, violence never is a solution and anger is never a good advisor - but we have to go beyond saying that things need to calm down and the issue here is how do we make it so that we have a police force that, when they see Blacks and Arabs don't tend to shout at them, use racist terms against them and in some cases, shoot them in the head." 15. Wide of square with teargas rising from crowd STORYLINE: Protesters marched down the streets of Nanterre on Thursday calling for justice for a 17-year-old shot dead by police a day before. The killing of the teen, identified only by his first name, Nahel, came during a traffic stop Tuesday. The incident captured on video shocked the country and stirred up long-simmering tensions between police and young people in housing projects and other disadvantaged neighborhoods. Nahel's mother, Mounia, called for a silent march Thursday that drew a large crowd to the square where he was killed. Some marchers had “Justice for Nahel” printed on the front of their T-shirts. “The police kill” read one marcher’s placard. Government officials condemned the killing and sought to distance themselves from the police officer’s actions.
