"Moby Dick" or "The Whale" novel was written in 1851 by Herman Melville. It was inspired by the sinking of the whaling ship Essex in 1820 after being rammed by a giant sperm whale, and an aggressive albino sperm whale named Mocha Dick, feared by harpooners. He had many encounters with whalers in the early 1800s, until being slain in 1838. These events led to the creation of Captain Ahab and his ship the Pequod. Sperm whales, (Physeter catodon), also called cachalot, are the largest of the toothed whales. The exact size of historic whales is difficult as many reports have inaccurate measuring, exaggeration, measured length taken by the curves of the body, or total size estimated from separated parts such as jaw bones. Due to massive amounts of whale hunting in the last few hundred years, its possible that the frequency of larger whales has lowered, and modern measurements may not represent past populations. The true size of Moby Dick is never really known, but the novel claims that the largest sperm whales reached a length of 90 feet, larger than any record, and since he was believed to be the largest sperm whale, that measurement is used.
