Note to players: Transcription vids are for viewing what is being played. It is no substitute for transcribing the solo yourself. Don't cheat yourself. "Why is there a 'Rabbit' motif throughout the album?" So apparently, Hodges was rather popular, and particularly - fecund. So they called him 'Rabbit'. “18 Carrots for Rabbit,” one of the standout tracks from the classic 1959 Verve album Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges. The record pairs two giants of jazz—baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan and alto saxophonist Johnny Hodges, best known for his long tenure with Duke Ellington. Though Hodges and Mulligan came from different musical worlds—Hodges from the swing era and Ellington’s lush orchestral settings, Mulligan from the cool-jazz and West Coast modernist scene—the album captures an effortless blend of their styles. “18 Carrots for Rabbit” (a playful nod to Hodges’ nickname, “Rabbit”) shows off their contrasting but beautifully complementary voices.
