Bad alternator. At first noticed burning smell upon start up. After a short drive the battery light comes on . Tested it with multimeter and it showed 12 volts should be getting at least 13 volts. I found a ALTERNATOR on a 2000 DODGE NEON at a local salvage yard and the alternator looked identical even though the numbers didn't match up. I was very happy to find that it worked perfectly and for the total cost of $30 I can live with a used alternator. This method is the only one I've ever used when removing the alternator and it's really not that bad and no where near as involved as doing a timing belt .
