In retrospect, it’s kind of weird that the first mainline Shin Megami Tensei game we got in the West was the third entry. Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne. This is because if you compare this one to any of the entries that came before or after, Nocturne still stands out as being this wholly original entry in the series. Longtime viewers might remember me saying that it’s hard to think of any other games that are like SMT Nocturne, and yeah, 5 years later, that sentiment rings true. It’s tough for me to think of any other games that are like Nocturne, whether that be from Atlus or anyone really. Nocturne’s legacy has been defined by many things. It’s brutal difficulty, dark story, and an oppressive atmosphere. “Persona’s edgy older brother,” as it’s sometimes known as. But would you believe me if I said that, despite all of that, I find Nocturne to be a rather cozy game for me? I know that might sound a bit strange considering the subject matter, but I’m serious. Nocturne is a game that I hold near and dear to me. It’s one that I make time to do a playthrough of every year or so. It’s slowly become one of my favourite games ever. It’s a top 10 for me, maybe even 5. Which is why I find it a bit annoying that my original video on this game is as shallow as it is. Look, I get it’s a cliche for YouTubers to cringe at their older stuff, but I don’t know, man. When you’ve been doing this crap for as long as I have, there’s a pretty decent chance that you’ll improve somewhere along the way. And it’s through gaining that experience that sometimes the urge to revisit an old project creeps its way into me. I’ve improved so much over the years, both as a writer and as a critic. So I think it’s time to give Nocturne the examination it deserves and tell you why Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne is one of, if not the most important titles, Atlus has ever produced. Buckle up because this might be a long one. Why Do People Love Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne? Depending on who you ask, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne is either one of the greatest Shin Megami Tensei games that ATLUS has ever produced. Or they'll say that Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne is an outdated and overrated game. To me, Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne has always represented one of the best eras in the PlayStation 2 generation of gaming. Without Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, we wouldn't get the popular sequels like Shin Megami Tensei IV and Shin Megami Tensei V. One could even argue that without Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, we wouldn't get games like Persona 3 Reload, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal. In this Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne Analysis, I'll be giving an in-depth and spoiler-filled examination of Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. This Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne Review is a redo of an older video of Nam's Compendium.
