We likely would not have known about Cambuskenneth Abbey Ruins had Vi not struck up a conversation with a stranger at the bus stop. Don’t get me wrong, we did not come to Stirling, Scotland unprepared. We did our homework. We knew what major tourist sites to hit as well as some off-the-beaten-path places to occupy our vacation days while in Stirling without breaking the bank everyday, so to speak. What’s more, we’ve been to Stirling before so this wasn’t our first time. But Cambuskenneth Abbey Ruins, just a short walk from the city center and totally free of charge to visit somehow evaded our crosshairs. That is, until an Englishman who lived over half his life in Scotland told us about it while riding the bus on our way to Wallace Monument, one of the not-to-be-missed major attractions in Stirling. (You can see him in our previous video.) One thing I like about vacationing is how we suddenly change our perception of the world, even if temporarily, while we try to escape the mundane monotony of our daily grinds. All of a sudden, we are thrust in a foreign land where, possibly because of the sights, sounds, and smells that are all new and exciting to our senses, we become filled with awe and wonder and become trusting of every stranger we meet which, come to think of it, we won’t normally approach on the streets of our own hometowns and instead view with suspicion and as competition to the limited resources surrounding us. And this is probably why we go on vacation. The grass on our lawn will grow, dust and grime will accumulate on the floors and shelves, and the cat will be lonesome and yet we should have nothing to worry about because everything will be just fine. When we come back, we will have become “renewed” not just because of the new sights we’ve seen and fares we’ve sampled but because perhaps we have also seen a side to ourselves—a kinder and gentler side toward our fellow human beings—that we can hope to one day maintain throughout the rest of our lives. Or at least until our next vacation comes along.
