Hello YouTube, Todd Ault here, and Welcome to Wall Street Words! Today's Wall Street term is "Business Development Companies" Now a BDC is an important component of the 1940 act, and it's a little derivative of the 40 act. They usually publicly traded. They have book values and they invest in other companies, usually in minority stakes. BDCs usually lend or invest in other companies, startups, venture capital, they lend money and they're like a publicly-traded fund that's, of course, a closed-end fund that trades, there's a management team internally managed, or you can have an external BDC where they're managed by an investment adviser. They limit the amount of stock options they can provide executives because they are really, truly an investment company and they invest in other companies usually that are private. That want to become public or need financing on the private market, these are really important BDCs and there's a lot of famous BDCs out there. As a side note to BDCs, the very first company I ever took over on the New York American, which was the American Stock Exchange at the time, was Franklin Capital Corp. When I looked at Franklin Capital Corp., I thought the book value was around four dollars a share and the stock was trading for 90 cents. Within a year of me taking over, the stock was twenty-two seventy-five and Franklin Capital Corp. was taken over by myself and my partners and I became the chairman and CEO of Franklin. Ultimately, it became Patient Safety Technologies. Ultimately, that company bought Surgicut Medical and ultimately Patient Safety Technologies, was sold to Striker for one hundred and twenty million dollars. Now there's a lot of publicly-traded business development corporations like Arie's Management, I think Apollo has some. These are effectively investment companies that you can buy and sell on the market. They use that money to invest in other companies. Today's word is BDC "Business Development Company." Definition - A business development company (BDC) is an organization that invests in small- and medium-sized companies as well as distressed companies. A BDC helps the small- and medium-sized firms grow in the initial stages of their development. With distressed businesses, the BDC helps the companies regain sound financial footing. Set up similarly to closed-end investment funds, many BDCs are typically public companies whose shares trade on major stock exchanges, such as the NYSE American Stock Exchange (NYSE American), NASDAQ, and others. As investments, they can be somewhat highrisk but also offer high dividend yields. In today's world, knowledge is powerful and I'm here to share my 30+ years of Wall Street experience with you.
