Ethernet and TCP/IP were not developed with the automotive use case in mind. Therefore, we need to have some “middleware” that bridges between TCP/IP and the services we need to access and control in the vehicle. Service Oriented MiddlewarE over IP or SOME/IP bridges this gap. It provides a messaging header and payload between devices, a way to make requests and get responses, and to discover/manage services. Think of it as the equivalent of a “last mile delivery”.
