On our way up to SDG in Elkhart, Indiana to get our new Atmos 4.4 air conditioner, we noticed our Mercedes Sprinter diesel engine ran sluggish and seemed low on power. Our 2014 Leisure Travel Vans Unity has been running fine for 10 years and nearly 70,000 miles, but now its shifting oddly and doesn't have the power to climb hills. On the steep areas of the Virginia and West Virginia interstates, we had the accelerator pedal to the floor and couldn't go much over 50 mph. We never saw any dash codes, but were worried about the drop in performance. So I did some research and found that our issue might be a dirty EGR Valve. So I ordered the following things and cleaned it. EGR Valve Gasket, #261.171, https://www.ebay.com/itm/225807186795 Parts Cleaning Fluid, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00... I found that an old doggy toothbrush worked very well as a scrub brush and a green scotch bright pad got the toughest stuff off and polished up the metal. I used a 1/4" drive socket wrench with extension and a 8mm socket for this project. You also need a large ball peen hammer and couple of larger flat head screwdrivers to work the EGV valve loose. I put a sheet of plastic and old towel underneath the valve body when cleaning to keep the mess down. Our 2014 Sprinter Engine actually sounded much smoother when we started it up after we cleaned it so I feel very good that cleaning the EGR Valve will address our issues. Our test drive proved cleaning the EGR valve was exactly what out 10 year old Sprinter engine needed. We have our power back!
